Air filter replacement, next to oil change, is the most important basic maintenance for your engine. A dirty air filter has a direct effect on how long your motor will last. Its functions include removing dust and dirt particles and preventing other foreign objects, such as leafs or bugs, from getting into your engine. It will also, in most cases, prevent a fire from occurring after a backfire from the engine. If your vehicle is driven in a very dusty conditions, check weekly. Under normal conditons, it can be done every 3 months or so. It will only take about 2 to 5 minutes of your time. If you need further assistance, contact us.

Tools: standard/phillips screwdriver or general purpose pliers. Some cars may require different tools.

Open the hood and locate the housing that holds the air filter element. Most cars have either clips or screws holding the housing together. Remove and inspect the filter.

A series of "V" groove belts and a single piece "SERPENTINE" belt that drives all the items under the hood. Belts must be checked regularly. If a serpentine belt breaks, you have no engine coolant pump, air conditioner compressor operation, power steering or alternator power. This will disable your vehicle immediately. Check your belts once every three months. It will only take no more than 1 to 2 minutes. Should your vehicle's belt breaks or about to break, do not attempt to replace it yourself. Some vehicle require special tools to do the task. Have your belt replaced by a professional.

Serpentine Belt:

There is only one belt to check. It is wider than a normal V belt, and one side is smooth while the other is ribbed.

Inspect the ribbed side for cracks in each rib. There must be no more than 10 cracks in any rib over 3 inches. Any more, the belt must be replaced. Other reasons for replacement are nicks and cuts. Serpentine belts should be replaced every 2 years or 30,000 miles.

Tension of the belt on most vehicles is automatically maintained by a spring loaded tensioner.

Check the belt in several places to ensure that you have an accurate idea of its condition.

V Groove

Check the belts (there are more than one) for tension: each belt has its own tightening method.

Grasp the belt in between the pulleys and feel the amount of free play or movement. Most vehicles should not have more than half inch (1.66 cm) of play or deflection between the pulleys. If it is more than half inch, then the belt may have to be tightened by a mechanic or someone who is qualified to perform the task. V groove belts generally last approximately 3 to 4 years or 40,000 to 50,000 miles.

Remember: most auto warranties do not cover belts. They are considered a maintenance item.

Many motorist tend to neglect their tires, especially when it comes to maintaining the correct air pressure. Under or over inflation pressure in the long run can lead to alignment problem. Inaccurate pressure will also cause your tires to wear out much faster. Furthermore, it can cause blow-out, skidding and other handling problems. This is one case where an ounce of prevention will save a whole lot down the road. Tire pressure should be checked at least once a month with a quality tire gauge. Tools: Tire pressure gauge always use a quality tire pressure gauge. Check the size of the tires to see if it matches the size on the sticker on the driver's side door. If it does, you can use the information on the side door to set the pressure.

In regions with harsh Winters, we need to prepare the car for the extreme cold and bad driving conditions. This "winterizing" needs to be done prior to the Winter or cold weather and maintained throughout the season. If you need further assistance, do not hesitate to contact us.

One of the most important items is to have a new set of winter wiper blades installed. Make sure they are the same length as your existing blades.

Using the new ones as a guide, you should be able to see the retaining clip used to hold the blade onto the wiper arm. Release the clip with a small screwdriver, and pull off the old wiper blade. Installation is a matter of just snapping the new blade into place.

Test to make sure they are securely fastened. Make sure your washer fluid is OK for cold weather and will not freeze. If in doubt, drain and replace the old fluid.

Have your oil changed and the coolant strength checked by a professional. Lubricate your hinges and doors. Use a lock lubricant on all your locks to ensure they will operate in the cold weather. Perform a major cleaning. Install snow or all season tires BEFORE the bad weather hits.

The Old Man can be mighty surly by the time he gets to strut his stuff each year, but there are several precautions you can take to minimize the effects of this mean streak.

Check your antifreeze. Antifreeze should be set at a freeze point of 40� below zero. You can check it with an anti-freeze tester (available through your local auto parts store.) If you need to add antifreeze, make sure you mix it with water 50/50 mix is best.
Pressure test the cooling system for antifreeze leaks.
Inspect belts and hoses.
Check and top off all fluids.
Inspect tires for tread depth, air pressure and general condition.
Test the electrical system. Old or weak batteries should be replaced with a good one. Do not try to be cheap here or you'll end up paying a lot more in the long run. Check terminals for corrosion. To clean them use a battery terminal brush along with a mixture of baking soda and water.
Install Winter wiper blades.
Brakes, suspension, steering, starters and alternators should all be checked for problems, as well.

Oiling your brakes would not be an ideal solution if you want your car to stop, but they certainly should be checked. There are several possible reasons why your brakes might be squeaking. One very common cause is that the brakes are low and need to be changed. Most newer cars have an audible disc brake wear sensor that warn you when this condition is present. Just because your brakes are making noise does not necessarily mean that changing them will be required. Sometimes it can be controlled by using an anti squeak compound or brake shim to keep brake pads from moving inside the caliper. Or, if the brake rotors are pitted (or rusted), another common noise enhance, the service shop can machine the rotors in an attempt to eliminate the noise. Many of today's cars use drum brakes on the rear axle. These drums are prone to accumulating dirt, dust and rust, all, or any of which can cause squeaking. Use of a brake cleaner (that will not harm the brake shoes) and lightly sanding the linings can help to reduce this problem. The best way to determine the source of the squeak and the resolution of the problem, though, is to get your car over to a reputable service station, while the brakes are still working.

I recently had a 70,000 mile tune up done on my 4 cylinder car. The mechanic recommended that I replace the oxygen sensor. Of course, I promptly laughed in his face and suggested that he might have been effected by a lack of oxygen as a little child. Can you tell me whether one of us is out of our senses?

I can assure you that your mechanic has not been spending too much time around the nitrous tank in between tune ups. Simply put, oxygen sensors are designed to measure the oxygen content of a cars exhaust gas. This information is used by the onboard computer to control and regulate the mixture of fuel and air being burnt in the engine. When the mix is proper, the engine will perform at the optimum balance of power, economy and at the lowest emissions possible. Oxygen sensors should be changed every 30,000 to 50,000 miles, or as part of a regular tune-up. Even though you might not notice performance problems, an overused sensor will cause poor gas mileage, as well as high exhaust emissions. If your mechanic suggests a new oxygen sensor in the future, and you have not had it changed before (or at least in the last 30,000 to 50,000 miles), he/she is probably very balanced and you might be well advised to have more common sense.

Your mechanic's timing is right on. The majority of 4 cylinder, and even some 6 cylinder, engine cars use timing belts. Timing belts are important because they make sure all the engine parts are synchronized for a smoother running car. Most manufacturers recommend changing your timing belt between 50-60,000 miles. (Check your owners manual to make sure.) If a timing belt breaks it could damage a valve or cause internal engine damage, causing thousands of dollars in damage. In this instance, time is not on your side. Get it changed right away, before your time is up.

Buying fruit and buying cars are pretty much the same thing the look and feel can tell you a lot. As I have spent more time under a hood than in a produce aisle I feel more comfortable telling you about several items you must consider before purchasing a used car.

Take a walk around the vehicle, paying close attention to rust, dents, scratches and general paint condition. You must be aware of the age of the car because this will be a key determinant as to how much degradation you should expect to see.
Observe the tread on the tires. Uneven wear is an indicator of poor alignment or a suspension problem.
Check the fluids in the car. Are they dirty, low or appear generally neglected? Are there any indications of fluid leaks in the driveway or under the vehicle?
If you are satisfied so far, take the car for a test drive. Before driving away test all controls and gadgets (ie. power windows and locks, mirror controls, seat adjustments, internal and external lights, air conditioning, etc.). Next, pay attention to the sound of the start and how the engine is running before pulling away. Make certain to drive under different conditions, especially on bumpy roads. An uneven road will encourage the car 'to speak' to you. Problems will exhibit themselves through unusual noises. Also, you might want to let go of the steering wheel to see if the car pulls to the side.
Test the brakes by making a few hard stops. Listen and feel for grinding, pulling or locking up.

Actually, as a driver that does not change his or her oil, you will very likely become best friends with the local auto repair shop owner, exactly the opposite result of what you had hoped to avoid. In fact, most automotive service organizations are not terribly sophisticated when it comes to marketing as they all just try to give away oil changes just so they can get you in the shop. The importance of changing one's car oil and filter is much greater than the value of the oil. Oil does a lot more than lubricate your engine. The oil you put in your car along with the additives found in car oil helps to cool and clean your engine, seals combustion chambers, protects internal parts from rust, removes moisture, and suspends and removes dirt particles. It is recommended that you change your oil and oil filter (no sense in running clean oil through a dirty filter) every 3000-6000 miles depending upon the type of driving you do and the conditions under which you drive. (We get some pretty tough Winters up here so closer to every 3000 miles would be best.) The typical oil change costs between $15-30 and takes about 30 to 45 minutes to complete. The typical engine overhaul costs over $1000 and could tie up your car for several days. Car Guy recommendation: Take some time and get yourself an oil change immediately. After that, stop by your friendly auto repair shop every 3 months or 3000 miles for a regular check up and an oil/oil filter change.
